If you were super desperate to escape you could just pay off the last two months of your contract. I'm stuck with AT&T till June 2011 as I upgraded to the 3Gs this year. The way that I see it is if next year the iPhone's on other carriers there's likely to be a new model, so paying the $175 cancellation fee to a) get the latest iPhone and b) to ditch AT&T doesn't sound like a bad deal :) (plus my old phone would be likely to fetch more than $175 on eBay anyhow.
