Hi, I’m Andrew Grant and I’m a software engineer living in San Francisco. I was born and grew up in Scotland, before stints in Bristol, Brighton and most recently, Los Angeles led me to sunny California!
I recently moved to the Bay Area to join LucasArts, where I’m part of a team working on something utterly and unbelievable exciting… and completely secret and confidential for quite a while
In my spare time I like playing with most things technology related, watching movies, reading, and cooking – before a career change I spent several years as a chef at the famous Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh, and their award winning restaurant, Number One.

Hi Andrew,
hello from Edinburgh, found your site while doing some research into my future project. I am contemplating building a windows home server, this would store all my media back ups and help serve them up to my current media extender an xbox 360.
I am limited by the xbox inability to serve up divx files.
A couple of question in regards what the home server would be able to achieve.
Would I be able to set up my newsreader program?
Still deciding whether a hs or a dedicated media player would suit me better.
Hope the weather is better there!

Dear Andrew,
I head up an indie company called Gothic Games. We’re working on a turn-based fantasy strategy game. If you can imagine “Risk” with individual units, spells, diplomacy and economy, that’s the main idea.
We’re looking for a couple more programmers to join our small team. As this is an indie company, the plan is to sell the game as a download and then everyone takes their fair percentage of sales. While that has its upsides and downsides, the team itself is comprised of dedicated industry professionals coming from such companies as Micro Forte, Wizards of the Coast, and GSC Game World. The artist who did our map also created the maps for New Line Cinema’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.
I won’t get too much further on the game here but am attaching an image of the interface (info panels extended), so you have an idea where things are going.
If you’re interested in learning more, do let me know.
Best regards,
Nikolai Soderstrom

Hi Andrew,
I was just on CNET and found the video about syncing an IPOD with 2 computers. It was mentioned that you had the instructions written out on your website but I can’t seem to find it. Is it in the archives? If so what month?
Must be great to be in California. I am a transplanted Texan living in Iowa and it is currently -24 degrees. That is the actual temperature, not even the wind chill, which is a -47! But, on the bright side, it will be a balmy 8 degrees tomorrow.
Thanks for your help, Tina

Hi,
I saw you give the reply below about how to get your current workspace in Mac OS. This works if you have a window in your app that you assume is in the current workspace. But how do you get a WindowRef to start with, without assuming your app has an open window in the current workspace?
Use HIWindowGetCGWindowID to get the CGWindowID for your WindowRef.
Use that ID with CGWindowListCreateDescriptionFromArray from CGWindow.h to get information on your window.
Look at the returned dictionary and extract the (optional) kCGWindowWorkspace key. That is your space ID for your window.

We love Whiist
Got a question for you – we are showing off Whiist – please see :
https://tranquilpc.homeserver.com/
As you can see there is a ‘blip’ above the support portal
we think this was created whilst adding a ‘link’ that for whatever reason failed.
the problem is, we can’t see it in the local or remote web page setup on your tab, so how do we get rid of it ?
is there a txt file / reg key that holds your links ?
thanks
David

Looking for some more info on post-queue. I use ecto for blogging, which doesn’t make it easy to set the publish date. Any way I can get post-queue to control the publication of *all* posts on my blog (that is, give up the ability to post things immediately)?

Hi Andrew,
I see that a woman named Elsa Wide left a response on your blog. She also contacted me. The website she gave seems innocuous, but I wanted to validate that the website wasn’t a scam or something. If I don’t hear from you, I’ll just assume it is. haha.
Good luck on your projects!

Hi Andrew,
I love the add-in. Is there a way to add a log off or “Home” button to the Photo Gallery page. Seems like there is no way to get back to the server home page from the gallery, unless I’m missing something.
Thanks in advance

Hi there,
It looks like your Get Post Image for WordPress download link is broken: http://www.andrewgrant.org/wordpress/download-manager.php?id=3
Is this file still available for download?
Or, is downloading the file no longer necessary?

Hi Andrew!
I want to publish some modifications I’m making to your Post Queue plugin, but you don’t seem to have indicated a license.
Can I treat it as GPL code?
(I would have posted this on the page for the Post Queue plugin, but the last post there was in 2007)

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for leaving the performance tips for VMWare Fusion. I just starting using Fusion 3 with XP home–Macbook Pro 2.26 CPU, 4 gb RAM.
I installed the XP with boot camp, so Fusion is running off that. To be honest, I’m pretty disappointed with how slow XP is with Fusion–it’s way faster in boot camp.
Is this because I still have the boot camp partition? So…if I use the Fusion option to get rid of the partition, things will run faster?
Thanks in advance if you can help

I wondered if you could help me.
everytime I try to synch my Iphone with my computer, the comouter crashes with a fatal error and i have to system reset to bring it back to life.
This is a recent phenomena. The Iphone works and the computer(windws XP)also works but the Iphone keeps knocking it out.
Any suggestions. I would be grateful for a reply

Hi Andrew, the hosting company I consult for would be interested in paying for advertising at the bottom of this post http://www.andrewgrant.org/2008/12/17/virtualizing-media-center-on-windows-home-server.html
Email me back and let me know whether you’d be interested or not.

Hi Andrew
I have an iMac and a PowerBook (2 years old). I want to copy the email contacts and book marks from one machine to the other (as I am going overseas and want the contacts and bookmarks with me).
I have a Targus file share cable and I also have the iMac data (that I want on the PB) synched to my iPhone.
What is the simplest way to do this – if you can help me please give easy instructions for an old lady to follow!
I looked at your synching 2 Macs to an iPhone but it was a but too advanced for me LOL.

Hi Andrew,
I have read a post of you at stackoverflow, writing that you had developed an iphone application 100% using only windows. Can you please describe the process – I have been searching and trying different methods for about a month but could not manage to make it work.

Hi Andrew.. I’m researching an article about setting up a Windows Media Center PC and found your Internet Radio Pack via a google search.
When I try to download the package though, the link goes to a ‘page not found’ message?
Is the pack still available?
thanks.

Andrew Grant – good luck with LucasArts and the top secret thingy. I liked the method for syncing an iPhone with multiple machines. I have a slightly different problem which I am confident you will be able to solve. I have a bar in Vietnam (i.e. no copywrite issues) and use Macintosh computers with iTunes. I have a very large music and movie collection. Travelling customers bring me their mp3 players and I put fresh music or movies on for them. Everything works well with iPods, iPod Touches and other Sony, Samsung or whatever music players. My problem is the iPhone always asks to be erased. How do I enable my iTunes library to Manually Manage any iPhone plugged in to it. Easy one for you – I think.
