Trying this on a iPhone 3gs, primary computer a MacBook, secondary one a PC. Seems to have worked generally, except I can't figure out how to not "sync" the apps on the secondary computer (which would wipe them off the iPhone...Apple keeps using that word "sync" but I don't think they know what it means).

Any advice?

Jean-Karlo you rock. Worked like a champ. Was modifying the files and every time it would automatically revert both files watched it happen in real time. I can now dump files from my Mac and PC. Whew... hated not being able to do that.

If you are having trouble with iTunes reverting to the old Persistent ID here is a fix:

The key for our modern day iTunes is corrupting the iTunes Library Hex file. First, change your iTunes Library and Music Library xml files with the new Persistent ID and save. Make a copy of the iTunes Library Hex file, then go in with a Hex Editor and just start deleting things, then save. That is it! The next time you open iTunes, it will rebuild the Library using the xml file with contains the new ID. If you have a large library, this will take a while, but does the trick!

It is ridiculous that you have to go into the inner workings of the application and modify code just to place files from 2 sources on your Iphone! It seems that Steve Jobs never grasped the basics of file management. What a joke! I will never be buying another Iphone again that is for sure.

Also why is that when I want to update the "firmware" on my Iphone, it will wipe out all my musics, apps, photos, etc? This should be a routine procedure like installing a service pack for Windows. It seems that Apple simply wants to wipe out my library at every oppurtunity they can.

for itunes 10 and higher:

sorry i didn't read all the comments but if your itunes is 10 or more, uninstall it, install an old version like itunes 7, do all the steps Andrew talks about in the beginning, and then update itunes, and the updated itunes 10 will have the id you put in itunes 7 :D

HxD is a free hex editor for all versions of Windows including 64-bit, works well, is relatively easy to use and is small. (<1MB)
Thanks to all here for the information. I used Ken's modified method (posted on Jan 25, 2011) to get it working for me.
